Flashback: YCS Austin 2013.03.25 Top 8 Feature Match: Oscar Zelaya vs. Francisco Saldivar

Starting from today, I'll try to cover the feature matches of high level competitors. In my opinion, it's really important to understand what your deck could do and what your opponent could have to counter your moves. Correct me if I made any wrong comments during the process.

You can have a look at the original link here: http://www.konami.com/yugioh/blog/?p=12825

Today I want to feature Oscar Zelaya, who was already winning an YCS top at Ecuador. He then eventually becomes the champion of YCS Austin. Congratulation to him.

Duel One

Saldivar started off Duel 1 by discarding Atlantean Marksman to Special Summon Mermail Abyssteus and using Abyssteus’s effect to add Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck to his hand.
Since Saldivar is his friend, they already know what deck they are facing. Having Linde in hand and Teus on field allows him to crash Linde into any of Oscar's monster, then make Big Eye or Gaios in Main Phase 2 (MP2).

Next, he discarded Atlantean Marksman and Mermail Abysslinde to Special Summon Mermail Abyssmegalo, and used his Abyssmegalo’s effect to add Abyss-sphere to his hand. He Set a card to his back row and then combined his 2 Level 7 monsters to Xyz Summon Mermail Abyssgaios! He Set another card to his back row before ending his turn.
This move is self-explanatory I believe.
Abyssgaios
Zelaya opened up with Mystical Space Typhoon, Royal Decree, Atlantean Marksman, 2 copies of Abyss-sphere, and Dark Hole. He activated Dark Hole to destroy Mermail Abyssgaios and then Normal Summoned Atlantean Marksman. He attacked with his Marksman, and Saldivar lost 1400 Life Points. Next, Zelaya used his Marksman’s effect to Special Summon Atlantean Dragoons from his Deck, and attacked directly with his Dragoons. Zelaya Set Abyss-sphere and Royal Decree before attempting to enter his End Phase. Saldivar flipped Abyss-sphere in Main Phase 2, and Zelaya Chained Mystical Space Typhoon from his hand to destroy it.
Oscar has 2 Spheres in hand but he Set only one of them, because Sphere's main target is Linde, but you can only have 1 Linde's effect per turn. Setting 2 Spheres allows him to make instant Rank 7 or to have backup to opposite MST, but 2 Spheres for a rank 7  is too costly and leaves him with 0 defense other than his Gaios.

Saldivar Summoned Deep Sea Diva and activated its effect to Special Summon Atlantean Marksman. He activated Abyss-squall next, and Zelaya Chained Royal Decree; but Saldivar Chained Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Royal Decree! Saldivar Special Summoned Mermail Abysslinde, Mermail Abyssteus, and Mermail Abyssmegalo from his Graveyard with Abyss-squall. He activated the effect of his Mermail Abyssmegalo by Tributing his Marksman to try to destroy Zelaya’s face-down Abyss-sphere; but Zelaya Chained it to Special Summon Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck, and the face-up Abyss-sphere stayed on the field. Next, Saldivar combined his Abyssmegalo with his Abyssteus to Xyz Summon Mermail Abyssgaios. He Tuned Deep Sea Diva with Mermail Abysslinde to Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor next, and then attacked Marksman to destroy it with Abyssgaios. In the End Phase, Abyss-sphere was destroyed and Zelaya’s Mermail Abysslinde went down with it. Zelaya Special Summoned Mermail Abyssmegalo from his Deck with the effect of Mermail Abysslinde.
I think Saldivar has made a misplay here: he should have attacked Linde using Gaios, then Catastor to go after whatever monster from Linde's effect.
Saldivar has now 3 threats on his field: Megalo, Gaios and Catastor. Oscar has used Dark Hole, but he has a fresh Megalo on his field.

Zelaya drew Mermail Abysslinde next turn. Next, He Normal Summoned Mermail Abysslinde and attacked Catastor. Mermail Abysslinde was destroyed by Catastor’s effect, and Zelaya Special Summoned Mermail Abyssleed from his Deck with the effect of Mermail Abysslinde. He combined his Mermail Abyssleed with Mermail Abyssmegalo to Xyz Summon Mermail Abyssgaios and then switched his Atlantean Dragoons to Defense Position.
Saldivar attacked and destroyed Atlantean Dragoons with his Abyssgaios.
Zelaya attacked Saldivar’s Abyssgaios with his own, destroying them both.
Saldivar attacked directly with Catastor and then passed.
Zelaya Set a card to his back row and passed.
Saldivar tried to attack directly with Catastor again; but Zelaya Chained Abyss-sphere to Special Summon Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck in Defense Position. Catastor attacked and destroyed Mermail Abysslinde, and Zelaya Special Summoned Mermail Abyssmegalo from his Deck with its effect.
Zelaya activated Abyss-squall next turn! He Special Summoned Mermail Abyssleed, Mermail Abyssmegalo, and Mermail Abysslinde from his Graveyard, and then combined his 2 Level 7 Monsters to Summon Number 11: Big Eye. He detached an Xyz Material from Number 11: Big Eye to take control of Ally of Justice Catastor. Next, he Summoned Atlantean Marksman and Tributed it to allow Abyssmegalo to attack twice. Two direct attacks from Abyssmegalo and a direct attack from Catastor wiped out the last 4800 of Saldivar’s Life Points!
In the Mermail mirror match, Gaios proves to be important to stop opposite Big Eye. Once 2 Gaios are gone, Oscar is free to do whatever he wants to.
4-monster-finish
Oscar Zelaya takes the first Duel!
Well I should retreat now. Later :D

Duel Two

Saldivar started off Duel 2 by Summoning Mermail Abysspike and using its effect to discard Atlantean Dragoons and add Mermail Abyssgunde to his hand. Next, he used his Dragoons’s effect to add Mermail Abyssleed to his hand. He Special Summoned Mermail Abyssmegalo next, by discarding Mermail Abyssgunde and Mermail Abyssleed. He used Abyssmegalo’s effect to add Abyss-squall from his Deck to his hand, and then used the effect of Mermail Abyssgunde to Special Summon Mermail Abyssleed. Next, he Tributed Mermail Abysspike with the effect of Mermail Abyssleed to send Pot of Avarice from Zelaya’s hand to his Graveyard. Saldivar combined Mermail Abyssleed and Mermail Abyssmegalo next, in order to Xyz Summon Mermail Abyssgaios. He Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn.
Francisco Saldivar
Zelaya started off his first turn of Duel 2 with Mermail Abyssteus, 2 copies of Mermail Abyssmegalo, Mermail Abysslinde, and Abyss-squall in his hand. He discarded Mermail Abysslinde to try to Special Summon Mermail Abyssteus; but Saldivar flipped Debunk to negate it and banish Abyssteus from the Duel. Zelaya Set Abyss-squall. In his Main Phase, Saldivar used Abyss-sphere to Special Summon Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck. Abyss-sphere and Mermail Abysslinde were destroyed in the End Phase, and Saldivar Special Summoned Mermail Abysspike from his Deck. He discarded Atlantean Dragoons from his hand to activate his Abysspike’s effect, and added Mermail Abysslinde and Deep Sea Diva from his Deck to his hand with the effect of Abysspike and Atlantean Dragoons.
Saldivar Summoned Deep Sea Diva and activated its effect to Special Summon Atlantean Marksman. He activated Mystical Space Typhoon next, destroying Zelaya’s Abyss-squall. Next, Atlantean Marksman attacked Zelaya directly, dropping him down to 6600 Life Points. Direct attacks from the rest of Saldivar’s monsters dropped Zelaya down to 200 Life Points.
5 Monsters
Saldivar combined Atlantean Dragoons and Mermail Abysspike to Xyz Summon Abyss Dweller and then Tuned Deep Sea Diva with Atlantean Marksman to Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor. He Set a card to his back row before ending his turn.
Zelaya drew a card and conceded, unable to overcome Saldivar’s field.
Francisco Saldivar takes a quick win in Duel 2 to push the Match to a final Duel! Oscar Zelaya will be going first in Duel 3!
Duel Three
Zelaya opened up Duel 3 with Mermail Abyssleed, Mermail Abysslinde, Mermail Abyssteus, Debunk, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Mermail Abysspike.
Zelaya's Duel 3 Opening Hand
He discarded Mermail Abyssleed to try to Special Summon Mermail Abyssteus in Defense Position, and Saldivar Chained Maxx “C” to draw a card. Zelaya added Mermail Abyssgunde to his hand with Abyssteus’s effect and Set Debunk before ending his turn.
Oscar Zelaya
Saldivar Set 2 cards to his back row and passed.
Zelaya drew Abyss-sphere and then Normal Summoned Mermail Abysspike. He used its effect by discarding Mermail Abyssgunde, and added Atlantean Marksman to his hand with the effect of his Mermail Abysspike. Next, he used his Mermail Abyssgunde’s effect to Special Summon Mermail Abyssleed from his Graveyard in Attack Position. He activated the effect of his Abyssleed to Tribute Abysspike and send Gorz the Emissary of Darkness from Saldivar’s hand to his Graveyard. Next, Zelaya attacked directly with Mermail Abyssleed, dropping Saldivar down to 5300 Life Points. Zelaya combined his Mermail Abyssteus with Mermail Abyssleed in Main Phase 2 to Xyz Summon Mermail Abyssgaios. He Set Abyss-sphere before attempting to enter his End Phase. Zelaya activated Abyss-sphere in Main Phase 2, and Zelaya Chained Mystical Space Typhoon from his hand to destroy it.
Saldivar activated Soul Taker to destroy Mermail Abyssgaios and grant 1000 Life Points to Zelaya. Next, he Normal Summoned Deep Sea Diva and used its effect to Special Summon Atlantean Marksman from his Deck. He tried to attack directly with his Marksman, but Zelaya flipped Abyss-sphere and Special Summoned Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck in Attack Position. In Main Phase 2, Saldivar Tuned his Diva with his Mermail Abysslinde to Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor. Saldivar Set a card to his back row, and then in his End Phase, Zelaya’s Abyss-sphere and Mermail Abysslinde were destroyed, and Zelaya Special Summoned Mermail Abysspike from his Deck. He used its effect by discarding Atlantean Marksman, and added Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck to his hand. The effect of Atlantean Marksman destroyed Saldivar’s face-down Abyss-squall.
Zelaya Set a monster and passed.
Saldivar attacked Mermail Abysspike with Catastor to destroy it.
Zelaya Normal Summoned Deep Sea Diva and used its effect to Special Summon Atlantean Marksman from his Deck. He Tuned his Marksman with his Diva to Synchro Summon T.G. Hyper Librarian and then attacked Ally of Justice Catastor to destroy it and deal 200 points of damage to Saldivar.
Saldivar discarded Mermail Abysslinde and Mermail Abyssgunde to try to Special Summon Mermail Abyssmegalo; but Zelaya flipped Debunk to negate Abyssmegalo and banish it! Zelaya Chained Maxx “C” to the effect of Abyssgunde, and Saldivar Special Summoned Mermail Abysslinde from his Graveyard in Defense Position with Abyssgunde, allowing Zelaya to draw a card.
Zelaya attacked Saldivar’s Mermail Abysslinde with his T.G. Hyper Librarian, destroying it and allowing Saldivar to Special Summon Mermail Abyssleed from his Deck in Attack Position. Next, Zelaya attacked Mermail Abyssleed with his Abysslinde. He lost 1200 Life Points and Special Summoned Mermail Abyssmegalo from his Deck with the effect of Mermail Abysslinde. Zelaya Set a monster and Set Mystical Space Typhoon before ending his turn.
Saldivar attacked and destroyed Abyssmegalo with Abyssleed.
Zelaya drew Atlantean Dragoons. He switched his T.G. Hyper Librarian into Defense Position and then passed his turn.
Saldivar Summoned Mermail Abysslinde and attacked Zelaya’s face-down Mermail Abysslinde to destroy it. Zelaya Special Summoned Mermail Abyssteus from his Deck in Defense Position, and Mermail Abyssleed attacked and destroyed Abyssteus.
Zelaya drew Pot of Avarice next turn! He activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Saldivar’s face-down Mind Crush and then activated Pot of Avarice! Next, he discarded 2 copies of Atlantean Dragoons to Special Summon Mermail Abyssmegalo. He added Abyss-squall to his hand with his Abyssmegalo’s effect and added 2 copies of Deep Sea Diva to his hand with the effect of his 2 Dragoons. Rest unknown

The report topic is locked because we had too many hot headed duelists over there LOL. This blocks me from getting any further info.

X-2 decks consist mostly of Fire Fist (lv4) and Mermail (nothing new). Some pre-LTGY Spellbook decks got really close to top, surprisingly.

That's all for today.

Abyss-scale of Mizuchi

For those who haven't read it before, here is it:

LTGY-JP064
Abyss-scale of Mizuchi
Equip Spell Card
Equip only to a "Mermail" monster. It gains 800 ATK. When a Spell effect that was activated on your opponent's side of the field resolves, negate that effect, then send this card to the Graveyard.

Recently this card is a new tech in OCG Mermail (oh nobody care about it, Ophion > Mermail lol). People just assume this card is bad because this card MUST be chained to the first spell from your opponent. So your opponent can just bait out Mizuchi using a dead spell. However this fact can change if you hold it back and grind until it's needed, like how you save Solemn Judgment for the last out of your foe. You can't set Judgment without any real reasons, same deal with Mizuchi. However, I believe that Mizuchi is in the same category as Judgment: "win more" cards. When you are in bad situation, neither Judgment nor Mizuchi can save you.

800 attack boost is nice too, since Megalo at 3200 attack can kill pretty everything.

Random post

So, I didn't attend Anger Regional this week-end, fearing my next 2 exams next week. My friends still made it, but apparently Antoine and Cocolo didn't top. I haven't heard any news from Seb and Tudor.

The interesting part is, we end up wanting to play a same deck for this regional (without telling to other members before going there lol). To be honest, Cocolo has beaten me swiftly using "that" deck yesterday, but I still doubt it since "that" deck was existing from many formats ago but almost 0 players had topped with it (excluding pro players factor here). I played some random singles on DN (lol DN quality?) using that deck and in every game I find out this deck offers so many options, I can rush for game in 1 turn, I can also make a pseudo-lock if I wasn't able to win this turn. Everything just fits the bill perfectly, since I always want to play a deck that can go for game whenever I want AND it must have control aspect build in.

There's still some weaknesses to look up and correct though, like the veiler-vulnerability, or Anti-spell Fragrance vulnerability etc... Veiler is widely used in OCG right now, Anti-spell Fragrance comes close next because that card is pretty much auto win if you go first vs Spellbook. Mermail somehow will be reduced in number because of Ophion's release (although we don't actually consider it as a true deck because Evilswarm deck is missing Evilswarm Kerykerion as OCG import in Lord of the Tachyon Galaxy).

I just discovered an old but good deck too, I plan to use it in my next local (will likely write a report if I don't get screwed too much lol).

Everybody hates Monday with a passion, including me, lol.

Fight or Flight

The title is taken from my Hoobastank's favorite album: Fight or Flight. Check it out :D.

So yeah, I'm not dead yet, and yugioh is always itching in my head. Back then, when I didn't top at France National 2012 (salty), then later I was thrown out of the competitive scene because I didn't even care to learn the basic combo list of Wind-Up, same treatment with Mermail. I got enrolled in life and I was always thinking "Yeah, it's now over, at this age, Yugioh isn't my main hobby anymore. It's stressful, I need to feed it with money, etc etc."

Later on, back to February 2013, my local friends invited me to have some fun at St Brieuc regional. As usual, we haven't had much time to test, so we were rooting on deck that comfort us the most. That regional was where Fire Fists made their first debut, but I have only played them twice on Dueling Network!! YOLO, and I proceeded to go undefeated during swiss, made a near impossible comeback to earn a 2-0 victory in top 8, and lost shortly 0-2 in top 4 versing a pro Fire Fist player.

The unexpected chain of surprise doesn't end there. If I recall correctly, almost 2 years ago, I voluntary spoke to my friend: "Someday I will join United Gosus", because I desperately wanted to prove myself a worthy player, and also because I wanted to have a team where we can share ideas, light up our passion, and share the joy of topping. Each time my memory flashed back, I laugh hard because that promise is near impossible to realize (not to mention, my study career must be my first priority in life). Well, until someday, we formed our own association, "Card'Advantage", where we organize our own tournaments (it has a certain degree of success, to be honest), and now we are fighting for it, in order to make it well-known in France.

I'm now "forced" to play any Yugioh events using our theme playmat :P My friend wants to take a photo of us togother at big events, but I'm unfortunately against that idea.

So yeah, cheer for us at the upcoming big events: Angers Regional (17/03) and YCS Lille (27+28/04). Our official page on facebook is https://www.facebook.com/cardadvantage.rennes
